Favourable soil and weather condition in Char areas of Mymensingh have put wheat cultivation in the spot light. Fortune smiles on wheat farmers of the district as they harvested bumper wheat production this year for the favourable weather and soil fertility, Department of Agriculture Extension [DAE] sources said. The price and demand of wheat is high this year, according to farmers’ and Department of Agriculture Extension [DAE] sources.
Wheat cultivation on char areas alongside the Old Brahmaputra River in sadar upzila and other places of the district are on rise as most of the land in this area is sandy where other traditional crops do not grow well, said the farmers.
Farmers, especially in char areas generally cultivate wheat as its cultivation cost is low and the profit is high. A farmer can produce 10 to 11 mounds of wheat on one bigha [32 decimal] of land by spending of Tk.1500 to Tk.2000 and they are selling per mound at Tk. 1100 to Tk. 1200 this year, farmers and DAE sources said while talking to this correspondent.
I gained a profit of Tk. 6,000 after meeting all cost from 20 decimal of land, said Bulbul Hossain, a farmer at village Mulakandi in Gouripur upzila of the district.
This year I earned around Tk. 7,000 from my 25 decimal of land following a bumper production, said Abdus Sobhan, a farmer of the same area. He also added that most of the farmers of the village have changed their lot by cultivating wheat in last couple of years.
Dilip Bin, another farmer of Char Khaghdahar informed he cultivated wheat on two bighas [64 decimal] of land this year and earned Tk. 25,000 as profit.
Traders from different parts of the country comes here to buy wheat and they supply it to different districts including Dhaka, Dinajpur and Natore as the demand of wheat is high there, DAE sources said.
Earlier, the DAE fixed a production target of 6860 metric tones of wheat from 1960 hectares of land. But the cultivation target exceeded, bringing bumper production, said Samir Kumar Sarker, Deputy Director [In-Charge] of DAE.
The DAE rendered supports to the farmers for wheat cultivation with seeds of high yielding variety to ensure bumper production, added DAE sources.
The wheat farmers faced problems at the initial stage of the cultivation this year as the cultivation was affected by dense fog but later the weather favoured the farmers, DAE sources went on.
